While every team dreams of lifting the Stanley Cup, some franchises, like the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks, would be content with mere respectability. For the Kraken, as a relatively new organization, building on their brief history is crucial. After a rough inaugural season (27-49-6), they bounced back with a strong sophomore campaign (46-28-8) but stumbled last season (34-35-13). Securing a playoff spot this year is vital for maintaining fan enthusiasm. The Kraken sold out Climate Pledge Arena last season, averaging 17,150 fans per home game. To keep that momentum and fan support, the team needs to show they can compete for the Cup.

The drop-off in offensive production from 2022-23 to 2023-24 was significant. Two seasons ago, the Kraken ranked seventh in goals per game (3.52) and boasted an impressive shooting efficiency (11.6%). Last season, they plummeted to 29th in goals per game (2.61) and shooting efficiency (9.1%). New head coach Dan Bylsma will need to reignite an offense that struggled with creativity and effectiveness. Jared McCann was the lone consistent scorer, notching 29 goals and 62 points. To succeed, the Kraken must develop a more balanced and potent offensive attack.

Last season, critics highlighted the Kraken's reliance on older players. Although new signings Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour are each 30, it's crucial for the Kraken to give their young talent more ice time. Shane Wright, a 2022 first-round pick, needs to become a regular in the lineup. Defenseman Ryker Evans, who showed promise in 36 games last season, should see increased playing time. Additionally, prospects like Logan Morrison and Ryan Winterton should be given opportunities if veterans underperform. While first-round pick Berkly Catton might not see NHL action this season, the Kraken must plan for his future integration.

The Kraken's aggressive moves to sign Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour raised some eyebrows. Stephenson's contract comes with a $6.25 million annual cap hit, while Montour's is $7.142 million, making them the second and third highest-paid players on the team. These signings must deliver results, or the Kraken risk facing backlash and being burdened with expensive contracts. Success from these acquisitions is crucial for the team's credibility and competitive standing.
