Matty Beniers' contract talks may be settled, but Ron Francis' job is never done. The Seattle Kraken general manager now faces the reality that several defensemen, including AHL players, are entering contract years. What does this mean for the team's overall defensive performance in 2024-25? Let's take a closer look.

Strong defense laid the foundation

Seattle's defense and goaltending were bright spots last season, ranking among the league's top 10 in several categories. The Kraken finished ninth in goals against average (2.83) and eighth in shots against (2,391). Advanced metrics reinforced their strong defensive performance, such as a minus-5.93 goals against above expected, while finishing fourth in expected goals against (151.93). Despite these impressive numbers, the team struggled to turn defense into victories, but they remained competitive, with 19 games reaching overtime despite offensive woes.
Brian Dumoulin was a key component, suiting up for 80 games with a plus-3 rating. However, this offseason, the Kraken traded Dumoulin to the Anaheim Ducks for a 2026 fourth-round pick after acquiring Brandon Montour from the Panthers. Montour, who has an annual cap hit of $7.14 million, the same as Beniers' new deal, is expected to take on a pivotal role this season.

Contract pressure building on key defensemen

Several Kraken defensemen face contract years ahead. While Montour is signed for the next seven seasons and Vince Dunn remains under contract through 2026-27, Adam Larsson and Will Borgen are both playing for new deals. Larsson, who was a top-pairing defenseman in 2023-24, is set to become a UFA next summer. Borgen, who played all 82 games last season and contributed 25 points, also has an uncertain future. As the season progresses, the performances of both players will be critical in determining their long-term roles with Seattle.

Young talent stepping up

Ryker Evans, a promising young defenseman, made his NHL debut last season and appeared in 36 games. Evans, on an entry-level contract, will become a restricted free agent next year, so his performance this season is crucial. Additionally, Josh Mahura, a 26-year-old veteran picked up in free agency, has had challenges staying healthy. His contract situation also puts pressure on him to make a case for his future in Seattle.

AHL depth adds to the mix

The Kraken also have four defensemen in the AHL-Gustav Olofsson, Maxime Lajoie, Nikolas Brouillard, and Cale Fleury-who will either become UFAs or RFAs next summer. While they may not be regulars unless injuries hit, they remain part of the Kraken's system and will require consideration from management during the offseason.

Motivation from contract years

With so many defensemen playing for new deals, the added motivation could benefit Seattle's defense in 2024-25. Contract years often push players to elevate their game, and this group is no different. The challenge for Ron Francis and the Kraken will be deciding which players are worth keeping around when their contracts come up for renewal. One thing is certain-Seattle's defense will once again be key to their success in the upcoming season.
