July 1 was a historic day in the NHL, with teams collectively spending a record $1.12 billion on the first day of free agency.

This massive financial commitment carries inherent risks, and it appears the Seattle Kraken may have taken a particularly dangerous gamble.
Following a disappointing playoff miss last season, the Kraken aimed to make a significant impact in free agency, signing defenseman Brandon Montour and forward Chandler Stephenson to seven-year deals. However, these moves haven't been universally well-received.
According to Bleacher Report's Adam Gretz, the Chandler Stephenson signing stands out as the offseason's most questionable move.
There are some free-agent signings that immediately raise red flags, and the seven-year, $43.25 million contract Seattle gave Chandler Stephenson is one of them
, Gretz remarks.
It feels like a move born out of desperation for offense, rather than a carefully calculated decision
.
Stephenson is undoubtedly a talented player, having played a key role in the Vegas Golden Knights' recent success with over 50 points in each of the past three seasons, while also being strong defensively.
The concern, however, lies with the contract itself. A seven-year deal worth $6.25 million annually-more than double his previous cap hit-appears excessive for a player of his skillset, potentially becoming a burden sooner rather than later.
In Vegas, Stephenson benefited from playing alongside Mark Stone, one of the league's top two-way wingers, who perfectly complemented Stephenson's abilities. While Seattle has strong players, none match the synergy he had with Stone. Whether that changes over time remains uncertain, but the current outlook is unclear.
A seven-year contract for a 30-year-old player who isn't a star and doesn't drive his own line is perplexing
, Gretz writes.
Over the past three years, when Stephenson wasn't playing with Stone, his teams managed only a 47 percent expected goal share during five-on-five play, with the offense dropping nearly half a goal per 60 minutes (3.28 to 2.72).

It's likely that in a year or two, Seattle will be scrambling to offload this contract
