One of the league's best defenseman signs with the Kraken on a HUGE deal!!!

One of the NHL's highest-scoring defensemen has found a new home. Brandon Montour has agreed to a seven-year, $50-million contract with the Seattle Kraken, as reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on Monday.

Montour, 29, showcased his offensive prowess this past season with the Florida Panthers, tallying eight goals and 33 points in 66 games. His efforts were instrumental in leading the Panthers to their first Stanley Cup victory in franchise history.

In the 2022-23 season, Montour notched an impressive 73 points, tying for fifth in scoring among defensemen. The 30-year-old veteran has amassed a wealth of experience over his 10-year NHL career, having previously played for the Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and Florida Panthers.

Montour is coming off a three-year, $10.5-million contract and is expected to bring significant skill and leadership to the Kraken's blue line. His signing marks a major addition for Seattle as they continue to build a competitive roster.

Over Montour's three full seasons with the Panthers from 2021-22 to 2023-24, his on-ice performance saw a notable uptick. Among 132 defensemen with at least 3,000 even-strength minutes, he ranked 98th in xGA/60 and 42nd in xGF%. While his defensive metrics remained steady, his offensive contributions soared in Florida, peaking with 73 points in 78 games in 2022-23.

It was mainly Buffalo that stifled Montour's offensive potential, whereas the Ducks were competitive during most of his tenure. However, Florida unlocked his true potential. With 147 points in 239 games as a Panther (averaging 50 points per 82 games), Montour is expected to continue this trend. Despite an injury at the start of the 2023-24 season limiting him to 33 points in 66 games, a quick return to form is anticipated.

Fit with Seattle:

Seattle has prioritized building a strong defensive core since joining the NHL in 2021-22, making Montour a fitting addition. They already have excellent defensive pieces, and Montour's arrival can significantly bolster their blue line. After missing the playoffs last season following a postseason appearance in 2022-23, this move aims to help them return to playoff contention.
