Philipp Grubauer Shines in Acting Debut
Like all NHL goalies, Philipp Grubauer is an expert at fighting through screens. However, the Seattle Kraken netminder is also adept at appearing on-screen.
In a nod to Troy McClure from The Simpsons, you might have seen Philipp Grubauer in projects like "Welcome to Our Crib!" and various Kraken broadcasts. Grubauer often stars in videos for the team and its partners. Fans might remember his collaboration with Filson in 2023's "Uncharted," showcasing his love for the outdoors. But his talents extend beyond nature-themed content; he's a natural on the small screen.
If you've visited the Kraken's YouTube page, you've likely seen Grubauer in "Welcome to Our Crib!" where he tours Climate Pledge Arena. Stopping at the players' bench, he quips, «This is where the magic happens,» and humorously points out the blank NBA locker room door, saying, «Maybe someday, we'll get a few more!»

Grubauer's charm isn't just limited to solo performances. Last summer, he appeared with Seinfeld writer Peter Mehlman in a video for VisitSeattle.org. Mehlman even tried on Grubauer's goalie gear, with Grubauer jokingly comparing his chest protector to RoboCop's armor. The duo later visited the Space Needle, where Grubauer playfully tested the glass floor's sturdiness.
More recently, Grubauer starred in promotional spots for WatchGuard, a computer security company. In these vignettes, he rushes to the Kraken offices in full gear to defend against a cyberattack, only to find the software has already handled it. He then advises an employee against clicking a suspicious link, showcasing his cybersecurity awareness.
The Kraken's actual IT department co-starred in these spots, highlighting the unique cybersecurity challenges sports teams face. IT director Sean Rawlins explained that players and staff travel frequently, requiring robust security for their devices. Cybersecurity engineer Ryan Willgues added that the team provides concierge IT services, assisting players with everything from game day needs to tech shopping advice.
Grubauer's roles, though currently small, have won him a budding fanbase thanks to his affable personality and acting chops. If his hockey career ever winds down, he might just have a future on the silver screen. Stranger things have happened!
