Since then, the Kraken haven't found the right person to appoint as captain. Reasons included players being too young and not ready for the role or veterans who didn't have a guaranteed future with the franchise.
Heading into the 2024-25 season, the Kraken have revamped their lineup and aim to make a playoff push. Leadership will be crucial, and selecting the right captain won't be an easy decision for the Kraken management and coaching staff.
Michael Traikos of The Hockey News mentioned that Matty Beniers, who was drafted as a potential captain, could fill the role.
The feeling is that the team is keeping the letter warm for second-overall pick Matty Beniers, who was described as a 'future captain' when he was drafted. But after winning the Calder Trophy in 2023, Beniers experienced a sophomore slump last season, so don't expect the team to put any more pressure on him.
If Beniers isn't ready, Traikos suggests Brandon Montour as an alternative. The veteran defenseman was a major offseason signing for the Kraken and is coming off a Stanley Cup win with the Florida Panthers, where he played a critical role on their blueline.
Similarly, Shane Wright could be a long-term option. The 20-year-old has been a captain at various levels, including Canada at the U-17s, U-18s, World Juniors, and the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. Wright is known for his hard work and exemplary leadership on and off the ice.
Another candidate is Jordan Eberle. The 34-year-old has been with the franchise since the beginning and embodies what it means to be a Kraken. His experience and the respect he commands from younger players make him a strong contender.
The Kraken could enter and finish this season without a captain, but all previous Stanley Cup winners and true potential contenders have filled that role.
