Seattle Kraken Contract Updates: Beniers Unsigned & ELCs

It's the middle of summer, and while most people are more interested in the ice in their drinks, there's still some hockey-related activity happening. Though it doesn't involve puck battles and goals, the Kraken have had some significant developments.

Matty Beniers Contract Mystery

One of the most significant unresolved issues for the Seattle Kraken this offseason is center Matty Beniers' contract situation. The 21-year-old, who previously played under a three-year deal that began in 2021, saw his contract expire on June 30. Beniers was instrumental in the Kraken's best campaign to date (2022-23), earning the Calder Trophy in June 2023 for his efforts.

During that stellar season, Beniers scored 24 goals and 33 assists with a plus-14 goal differential. His performance dipped in 2023-24 with 15 goals and 22 assists and a minus-11 rating, but his Rookie of the Year honor cemented his reputation. With his rookie contract completed, the Kraken have made a qualifying offer, but as of July 20, there's been no official response.

The delay in negotiations has fans and pundits speculating. The qualifying offer, based on the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), could be a one-year deal worth around $874,000, primarily to retain Beniers' free agency rights. The arrival of big contracts for players like Brandon Montour and Chandler Stephenson may have complicated matters, but there is still time before training camp in September.
