Seattle Kraken's offensive struggles leave room for key trade opportunities

The Seattle Kraken found themselves at the bottom of the scoring charts last season, ranking 29th out of 32 teams and averaging only 2.61 goals per game. To address this offensive shortfall, the team made notable free-agent signings in Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour, aiming to strengthen their roster.

signings fail to solve kraken's goal-scoring issue

While bringing in Stephenson and Montour marked major steps for the young franchise, neither signing truly solves the Kraken's need for a consistent 20-plus goal scorer. Stephenson, a ten-year NHL veteran, only reached that milestone once in the 2020-21 season, and Montour, despite his offensive contributions from the blue line, has never exceeded 16 goals in his career.

three trade targets to watch for seattle

With the Kraken still in search of an offensive boost, here are three forwards on the trade block who could help elevate their scoring attack.
Trevor Zegras | Anaheim Ducks
Zegras, a flashy forward entering his fifth NHL season, could be just the dynamic presence Seattle needs. He's proven his offensive ability by notching over 60 points in both his second and third seasons in the NHL, solidifying his reputation as a high-impact player. However, his 2023-24 season was cut short to just six games due to a broken ankle in January.
Back in June,
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic
reported that the Ducks were listening to trade offers for Zegras, with the Montreal Canadiens among the interested parties. For the Kraken, Zegras' playmaking and creativity would fit perfectly alongside offensive-minded defensemen like Vince Dunn and Montour, giving the team a much-needed scoring spark.
Patrik Laine | Columbus Blue Jackets
Patrik Laine, a proven goal-scorer, presents another intriguing option. Laine has hit the 30-goal mark three times during his NHL career, a level of scoring consistency that would be a valuable addition for Seattle.
Unfortunately, Laine's 2023-24 season was limited to 18 games after he sustained a broken clavicle in December. Laine has also dealt with personal challenges, entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for mental health support. In July, Laine was cleared to return to the ice.
Aaron Portzline of The Athletic
recently indicated that Columbus is open to trading Laine, with GM Don Waddell interested in receiving an active roster player in return, without retaining any of Laine's salary. Acquiring Laine would be a bold move for Seattle, but the change of scenery could help reignite his game away from a rebuilding Blue Jackets team.
