Two former Team Canada World Junior players, who are facing charges related to an alleged group sexual assault from 2018, have signed contracts with top teams in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Despite facing serious legal issues, Michael McLeod and Dillon Dubé have secured spots in the KHL, with McLeod joining Astana Barys in Kazakhstan and Dubé listed on the roster of Dinamo Minsk in Belarus.

These developments come as the players await trial, with both denying any wrongdoing and planning to plead not guilty. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly took place in a hotel room during a Hockey Canada Foundation event in London, Ontario.
The NHL has refrained from taking disciplinary action against the players, with Commissioner Gary Bettman stating that the league will wait for the court process to conclude before making any decisions. However, experts like Professor Laura Misener of Western University argue that the NHL would face significant backlash if the players were allowed to continue playing in North America while facing such serious accusations.
In contrast, Russian teams appear less concerned with the ethical implications, according to Misener, who suggests that the KHL may not adhere to the same standards regarding human rights and harassment.
Adding to the controversy is Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine, which has led to warnings from the Canadian government for players to leave the country. Despite the charges and geopolitical tensions, legal experts note that the players are not considered flight risks, allowing them to travel and work abroad.
Suzie Dunn, an assistant professor at Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law, emphasizes that professional athletes should uphold a high standard of conduct and should consider stepping aside until their legal cases are resolved. However, with the KHL season approaching, it remains to be seen whether the remaining accused players will also find opportunities abroad.
