2024 Stanley Cup Final: Panthers Clinch Their First NHL Title, Defeating Oilers in Game 7

The Florida Panthers have secured their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, triumphing over the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in a thrilling Game 7 on Monday night. The Panthers successfully avoided squandering a 3-0 series lead with a stellar performance.
Star forward Sam Reinhart led the charge for Florida, scoring the decisive goal late in the second period. At 15:11 of the period, defenseman Dmitry Kulikov rescued the puck from danger near the Florida net, sparking an offensive play. Reinhart received the puck in the offensive zone, skated into the face-off circle, and unleashed a scorching shot past Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner. This marked Reinhart's first goal since Game 3 of the series.
Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who had struggled in Games 4-6 with a 4.00 goals-against average, delivered a standout performance in Game 7. Bobrovsky was sharp throughout, stopping 23 of the 24 shots he faced and providing the backbone for the Panthers' defense.
Despite their valiant effort, the Oilers fell short of making a historic comeback. However, Oilers star Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the NHL postseason. McDavid amassed 42 points (eight goals and 34 assists) throughout the playoffs, the fourth-highest point total in a single postseason. He became just the sixth player in NHL history to win the Conn Smythe Trophy while on the losing team, joining Reggie Leach (1976) as the only skater to achieve this feat.
The Panthers opened the scoring just 4:27 into the first period when forward Evan Rodrigues launched a shot towards the net that seemed to be going wide. Teammate Carter Verhaeghe redirected the puck past Skinner, breaking a six-game goalless streak for Verhaeghe. Verhaeghe is tied with teammate Matthew Tkachuk for the most goals (11) in a single postseason.
The Oilers quickly responded over two minutes later. Veteran defenseman Cody Ceci spotted Mattias Janmark streaking behind the defense and delivered a perfect pass. Janmark capitalized on the breakaway, scoring on Bobrovsky to tie the game.
The Oilers aimed to become only the second team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win the Stanley Cup, a feat achieved solely by the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs. However, the Panthers held firm to clinch their historic victory.
