As the 2024-25 NHL season approaches, several teams are grappling with significant lineup decisions that could shape their success in the coming year. Here's a closer look at three teams with pivotal choices to make:

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a period of uncertainty with their 2024-25 roster, particularly in the forward and defensive lines. With Tyler Bertuzzi's departure, the top six forwards are set for a shakeup. Potential combinations could see Matthew Knies lining up with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, while the second line may feature John Tavares and William Nylander. However, filling the remaining forward spots-whether with Bobby McMann, Nick Robertson, or a new acquisition-will be a critical decision for the Leafs.
On the defensive side, the additions of Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson provide new pairing possibilities. Expected combinations might include Tanev with Morgan Rielly and Jake McCabe with Timothy Liljegren. The final defensive pairings are still in flux, with options like Ekman-Larsson potentially partnering with Jani Hakanpaa.

Vancouver Canucks

After a solid 2023-24 season, the Vancouver Canucks have overhauled their forward group. The loss of Elias Lindholm to Boston was balanced by the additions of Jake DeBrusk, Daniel Sprong, Kiefer Sherwood, and Danton Heinen. Head Coach Rick Tocchet now faces the challenge of finding the best fit for these players. DeBrusk could slot into the top line with J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser, or he might take on a different role within the lineup.
Defensively, the Canucks are set to rely on Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek as their top pair. The second pairing could see Carson Soucy alongside either Tyler Myers or Vincent Desharnais, while Derek Forbort is also a contender for a spot. Finding the right chemistry among these new defensive combinations will be key to the Canucks' success.

Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars are undergoing significant lineup changes following the retirement of Joe Pavelski and trades involving Radek Faksa and Ty Dellandrea. Young talents like Wyatt Johnston and Logan Stankoven are expected to step into larger roles, while Mavrik Bourque, the AHL's top goal-scorer, could make a significant impact. Colin Blackwell is anticipated to contribute on the fourth line.
Defensively, the Stars have replaced veterans Chris Tanev, Jani Hakanpaa, and Ryan Suter with newcomers Matt Dumba, Ilya Lyubushkin, and Brendan Smith. The top pairing of Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley is likely to remain intact, but the other defensive pairings are still to be determined, with Lyubushkin potentially partnering with Esa Lindell or Nils Lundkvist.
As these teams navigate their lineup decisions, fans are left wondering how these changes will impact the upcoming season.
