Maple Leafs Pursue Chris Tanev Deal Ahead of Free Agency

The Toronto Maple Leafs are poised for a significant upgrade to their defensive lineup with Chris Tanev's potential acquisition.
Toronto secured the negotiating rights to Tanev from the Dallas Stars, as reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. In exchange, the Stars received forward Max Ellis and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick.
Acquiring Tanev's rights allows the Leafs to negotiate a longer-term contract, potentially up to seven years, ahead of the free agency period starting July 1. Tanev, 34, previously played for the Calgary Flames and most recently the Stars, contributing one goal and four assists in 19 regular-season games and two assists in their playoff campaign.
With 14 NHL seasons under his belt, Tanev brings experience and defensive prowess to Toronto's blue line, having amassed a total of two goals and 17 assists last season between Calgary and Dallas.
