There has been a growing outcry about who will be the next captain of the Seattle Kraken. Since Marc Giordano was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs two years ago, the team has been without a captain.
The fan base has loudly voiced their opinion that Yanni Gourde should be named captain since he joined the team two years ago. Last year, he played 81 games, scoring fourteen goals with 34 assists for 48 points and maintaining a +3 rating. He also holds two Stanley Cup rings and possesses long playoff run experiences.
However, it seems that the Seattle Kraken may have a different choice in mind, which has shocked some of the fan base.
The decision of who will be captain rests with the head coach, Dave Hackstol. It's been a common practice for coaches to bestow the title upon a veteran player like Gourde or Jordan Eberle, out of respect for their time in the NHL and the veteran presence they bring to the dressing room.
However, there is a strong argument that Matty Beniers has become the face of the franchise after winning the Rookie of the Year last year. In his second season with the team, he played 80 games and scored 24 goals with 33 assists for 57 points, maintaining a +4 rating.
He also participated in fourteen playoff games, contributing seven points with a +6 rating.
It remains to be seen what Hackstol will decide, but I believe he can't go wrong with either choice.
