Assessing Philipp Grubauer and Joey Daccord this season

The Seattle Kraken enter the 2024-25 season with many questions surrounding their goaltending.

Philipp Grubauer, who joined the team in the 2021 offseason, has struggled to replicate his success from the Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals. Over three seasons with the Kraken, his save percentage has never exceeded .900, with a steady but slow increase from .889 to .899. Injuries have also plagued him, reducing his playtime.

Last season, Joey Daccord stepped up during Grubauer's absence, playing 14 more games and posting a .916 save percentage and a 2.46 goals-against average over 50 games. Entering the final year of his contract, Daccord's breakout performance raises questions for new head coach Dan Bylsma. Should he opt for a tandem approach or designate a clear starter?

Grubauer's $5.9 million cap hit and three remaining contract years make him difficult to trade or buy out. Despite being paid as a starter, his performance hasn't met expectations. Meanwhile, Daccord, paid as a backup, has shown starter potential.

The Kraken, aiming for a playoff spot, can't afford to wait for Grubauer to find his game. Training camp and preseason will see both goaltenders competing for the starting role, with the bulk of starts likely going to the one performing best.
