As the 2024 Summer Olympics kick off in Paris, we're reminded of Pierre-Édouard Bellemare, one of just twelve French players in NHL history. The Kraken's 39-year-old center from Le Blanc-Mesnil, France, is currently an unrestricted free agent, waiting for a new contract for the 2024-2025 season.

Nicknamed "Belly" by teammates and fans, Bellemare began his NHL career at age 29 and played for several teams before signing with the Kraken in 2023. In April 2024, he celebrated his 700th NHL game.
Bellemare was a fan favorite last season, known for his positive energy and crowd antics during pre-game warmups. He is a valued mentor, respected for his sportsmanship on and off the ice.
After helping secure a win against his former team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, he received his first "Davy Jones Hat" for his efforts. However, he was sidelined for about six weeks due to a lower body injury in December 2023, giving younger centers like Shane Wright, Ryan Winterton, and Logan Morrison more ice time. Questions have been circulating on whether or not the Kraken have room on the bench for Bellemare next season.
In the offseason, Bellemare recovered from his injury, represented France in the Men's World Championships, and was awarded best player along with Quentin Papillon and Yohann Auvitu.
Bellemare's experience, paired with the energy of newer players, could be a successful asset, but the clock is ticking, and the Kraken need to make a decision.
