According to Kaplan, during the exit meeting this season, many key players mentioned how they did not want to play for Hakstol next season which forced management's hand.
On the outside looking in, Hakstol seemed like a solid head coach for the Kraken but evidently the players did not agree if they felt it was bad enough that they would rather not be in Seattle if he was the coach moving forward.
