Kraken's Goalie Dilemma: Who Should Start?

Taking a look back at last season, one of the Seattle Kraken's major concerns was their goaltending. As the new season approaches, the question remains: who should be the Kraken's #1 goalie?

Despite missing the playoffs and making little impact in the goalie market, the decision on the starting goalie rests on the shoulders of two contenders. Let's break it down.

Many Kraken fans believe Joey Daccord should be the starter moving forward. He held the majority of starts last season, performed admirably, and proved he deserves another full season at the NHL level in 2024-25.

In 50 games, Daccord posted a 19-18-11 record with three shutouts. He had a .916 save percentage, comparable to some of the top goalies in the NHL, and maintained a respectable 2.46 goals-against average. With better offensive support, Daccord could have ranked among the top five goalies last season. This is a contract year for him, adding extra motivation to prove his worth and potentially lead the Kraken back to the playoffs.

Last season's backup, Philipp Grubauer, struggled compared to Daccord. In 36 games, Grubauer had a 14-16-2 record with a .899 save percentage. Since joining Seattle in the expansion draft from Colorado, Grubauer has consistently posted sub-.900 save percentages. These numbers are disappointing, especially for a former Vezina Trophy finalist.

Who Should Get the Nod?

Should Daccord get another shot at leading the Kraken back to the postseason, or should Grubauer be trusted to rebound after three challenging years?

It makes the most sense to keep Daccord as the starter and Grubauer as the backup for the 2024-25 season. Both goalies will likely share time, but if one gets hot, the roles might reverse.
