Kraken Owner's Ambitious Plan: Reviving Seattle SuperSonics Amid NBA Expansion

Since the Seattle SuperSonics last graced an NBA court in 2008, Washington State has soldiered on without its beloved basketball team. Yet, the absence of this once-vibrant franchise still leaves a void in the hearts of many, particularly younger sports enthusiasts who know the Sonics through retro video games like NBA Jam or from YouTube highlights featuring legends like Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, and even Kevin Durant during his brief stint.

For newer NBA fans, the Sonics are a distant memory tied to history lessons about how the Oklahoma City Thunder inherited their legacy when the franchise relocated. But hope may be on the horizon, thanks to Samantha Holloway, owner of Seattle's NHL team, the Kraken. Holloway is actively pursuing a plan to resurrect the Sonics and bring them back to Seattle, coinciding with the NBA's consideration of expansion.

According to Bloomberg's Anna Edgerton, Holloway is positioning herself to secure one of the NBA's two proposed expansion teams, aiming to breathe new life into the Sonics franchise.

"It's a phenomenal market, and the NBA recognizes that. We're navigating this with patience, alongside our passionate fans, eagerly anticipating what lies ahead," said Holloway on her vision for reviving the Seattle SuperSonics.

While the NBA expects bids reaching up to $4 billion from interested parties, funds that would be distributed among the league's 30 current team owners, Holloway remains cautiously optimistic. She acknowledges that discussions about additional investors are premature, aside from potential involvement from the Kraken's current ownership group.

With the Kraken's cutting-edge $1.15 billion arena already established, Seattle is poised to welcome back the Sonics with open arms. Thanks to Holloway's dedication, locals may soon have the opportunity to cheer for their beloved basketball team once more.
