Canucks Sign Daniel Sprong to One-Year Contract

The Vancouver Canucks and forward Daniel Sprong have agreed to a one-year, $975,000 contract for the 2024-25 season, according to reporter Rick Dhaliwal.
Sprong, 27, tallied 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points in 76 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. During the 2022-23 season with the Seattle Kraken, he recorded career highs with 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 points in 66 games.
Over eight NHL seasons, the Amsterdam native has accumulated 85 goals and 74 assists for 159 points in 344 games, playing for the Red Wings, Kraken, Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Drafted by the Penguins in the second round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Sprong played 18 games for Pittsburgh in 2015-16 before returning to the QMJHL's Charlottetown Islanders. He also played for the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during the postseason.
In four QMJHL seasons, Sprong notched 117 goals and 144 assists for 261 points in 199 regular-season games, adding 24 goals and 27 assists for 51 points in 38 playoff games.
Sprong's standout professional season came in 2017-18 with the AHL Penguins, scoring 32 goals and 33 assists in 65 games. Despite his AHL success, he was traded to the Ducks for Marcus Pettersson. After stints with the Ducks and Capitals, he joined the Kraken, where he had his career-high 2022-23 season, followed by a one-year, $2 million contract with Detroit.
The Canucks ended the 2023-24 season with a 50-23-9 record, winning the Pacific Division and reaching the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they lost to the Edmonton Oilers in seven games.
