Junior Hockey Player Retires Due to Injuries

Monday saw the announcement that a junior hockey player in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League would be leaving the game.

Lane Hinkley of the Charlottetown Islanders announced that he will be retiring from hockey at the age of 19 years old.

Hinkley's decision came after a medical examination found a lesion in his brain after a series of injuries.

Hinkley made an Instagram post officially retiring as a hockey player.

«Friday morning, I was told that my hockey career is over. Too many hits, too many punches, too many concussions that I didn't properly heal from. The doctor said my MRI showed there is a 25mm by 17mm lesion on my brain, as well as other scars that they couldn't determine the size of. Currently, I am at risk for CTE and early dementia.»

The 19 year old defenseman was just beginning his fourth season of junior hockey, which would be his last year of junior eligibility.

Hinkley expressed his gratitude for being able to suit up in 143 games in the QMJHL as a small town kid from Nova Scotia.

Concussions in professional sports continue to be an issue that has seen many careers ended because of it.
