The NHL has suspended Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto 41 games for violating the NHL's gambling rules, the first player to do so in league history.
Pinto was one of the most talked about players throughout the offseason because of how well he played for the Senators last season.
In 2022-23, Pinto posted 20 goals and 35 points in all 82 games for Ottawa as a rookie.
His performance led to him having contract disputes with the Senators, which frustrated fans because they wanted to keep him around.
It is now believed that Ottawa's management was made aware of Pinto's gambling a few weeks ago and decided not to move forward with contract negotiations until there was a decision from the league.
This puts the Senators in a tough spot, not only because Pinto won't be able to play, but his suspension can't be served until he signs a contract.
Updates should follow on whether or not Pinto signs a contract in order to serve his 41 game suspension.
